To hear the showrunners tell it, Jon Snow is dead. Maise Williams has said so. Carice van Houten said so. The boss of HBO has said so. It’s the company line, and everyone seems to be sticking to it. But any good Braavosi worth his weight in iron coin knows that this just can’t be. George R. R. Martin takes a worrisome pride in fan reaction to the deaths he’s wrought upon his characters so far, but he’s been cryptic when alluding to the fate of The North’s most famous — and arguably most important — bastard. Jon’s place in the overall narrative has still not been revealed, and that’s what keeps fans incredulous at the thought that he’s just gone without an explanation.
If Jon had anyone left behind to tell his story, maybe it would make sense to kill him off. But Ned Stark, who raised Jon Snow like his own bastard son, didn’t impart the knowledge of Jon’s mother to Snow or to anyone else that we’re aware of. And it would be far too much of a Deus ex Machina to have some old confidant of Ned’s to just pop up and say, “oh hey, by the way, here’s Jon Snow’s story, and he’s totally dead. Sorry ‘bout it.” The increasingly mainstream R+L=J theory posits that Jon is the son of Ned’s sister Lyanna Stark and Rheagar Targaryen. If true, that would mean that he has the blood of Ice (the Northern-bred House Stark motto is famously “Winter is Coming”) & Fire (the Targaryens keep dragons as pets for crying out loud) and that the collective title of this series of books could be very well focused on Jon, and likely Dany as well.
Now, with all of that being said, Kit Harington was spotted on set filming new scenes for the upcoming season of Game of Thrones. Could these scenes be flashbacks? Sure. Are they likely to be flashbacks? That’s harder to say. Jon appears to be dressed in duds similar to what he wore when he still lived at Winterfell, but are the show runners seriously going to give us a season one-era flashback now? I most certainly doubt it. He’s not in his Crow attire, that much is true, but he also appears to be much further south than the Wall. Alfie Allen, who plays Theon Greyjoy, AKA Reek, appears to be standing right next to Kit, although he’s dressed down in civilian duds, so it’s unlikely he’s filming a part for that particular scene and his scenes would have either preceded or followed the one the cast and crew were in the middle of in that photograph. Under the umbrella that is keeping the monitors and equipment shielded from the elements, there also stands a lady who appears — to me at least — to look an awfully lot like Carice van Houten (Melisandre herself) also dressed down in civvies. That observation is a stretch, to be sure, so take it with a grain of salt. The woman could very well be a producer, camera tech, or any such crew member. But as Alfie and Kit’s respective characters did not spend much time together in the first season, it’s unlikely that a flashback filmed now, 5 years after the show’s debut, would involve the two of them in some way. And a flashback to a time when the two of them were in the same place most CERTAINLY would not involve Melisandre. So what does it all mean? When it comes to GoT, who the eff knows?
All I know is that I refuse to accept Jon Snow’s death as fact. Even if Martin kills Snow off in the upcoming book, I still will refuse to accept that fact. You just don’t set up your man for a touchdown play only to then pull him out of the game. You just don’t George! Furthermore, Kit Harington’s absence at the Golden Globes was mighty suspicious, given that if he had truly exited the show, he’d be more than happy to give post-mortem interviews about his time on the show especially on a night celebrating the show, and talking about how proud he was that they had been nominated for awards. Instead, the HBO brass likely kept him sequestered from such a press-heavy event so as to prevent any possible clue leaking out about his new upcoming filming work on the show.
What do you fine folks think about the photo? Am I reading far too much into Kit’s presence, as well as the folks around him? I want to know so let’s discuss below or on Twitter. Long live Snow!
