I've realized something lately: my media consumption is reaching the point wherein I'm very much able to recognize what I find "good", but I've stopped taking the time to analyze the why of it all. I've stopped the critical thinking and expository thinking that are key for writing reviews. Considering a partial point of this site when I envisioned it some time ago was to not only expose my readership to things I find pertinent and interesting, but also to explain why I find things pertinent and interesting, I have to say I feel a little shame for not taking the time to hone those skills.
Concerning Jake Jaxson's The Haunting, I can say I have a few words to share, and that makes me happy. I watch this mini-feature and I'm absolutely delighted. To a broader point, nearly all of the productions that Cockyboys have been handing out lately have left me delighted. I call The Haunting in particular a mini-feature and not a scene because we're not just watching a flourescently-lighted and single location staged sex scene padded on the front and back ends by some cheesy b-roll. No, what we're seeing here is a well crafted piece of themed erotic filmmaking that ventures neither into pretentiousness or camp. In someone else's hands it could've easily slid into either, or both.

Avant Erotica Nerdjizz favorites House of XY teamed up with Austin Wilde recently. The photo below is from the latest in their sexually charged photographic art series titled 'Dripping.' Here's a preview of what's to come. Visit their website to view released photo sets and video. You can also see more on their Tumblr and Twitter feeds.
I've mentioned them before, but I'm a true fan of the collective video event that has come to be known as The Black Spark. They grabbed headlines months ago when their sexual video vignettes full of trippy visuals and backed by music tracks hit the blogosphere. What they had created was not only aesthetically pleasing, but was timed perfectly for consumption. By being tailored to fit the length of a song (usually 3-4 minutes) what they had given us was far shorter than a full-feature video, but longer than a 60-second clip from some tube site featuring a cumshot. Many of the original videos they'd uploaded to XTube have been replaced or retired, but thankfully, they now have their own website from which to share their creations.
Part of what makes the videos so appealing is that there's not a sense of outside interference in the direction. These guys are shaping the narrative exactly how they want to, others be damned. Much to the viewers' delight, their editing skills offer a fresh take on some familiar imagery. Sure, we've all seen cocksucking and cumshots, but never quite like this.
The real credit to the ability of the Black Spark has been taking something universal, sexual and personal, and making it fresh to view again. It's not that porn has become stale, but let's face it, every once in a while, we need to be shocked out of our complacency. Porn has become a part of so many people's routine, it's nice to inject a fresh perspective into what we're watching.
One of my favorites, Sun's Gone Dim and the Sky's Turned Black:
The unfortunate side-effect of internet fame is the detractors who want to cut that fame in half, if not outright take it away. I'm fully aware that not everyone will be a fan of this kind of erotica. If our interests were homogenized, there would be no need for creativity in the first place. I have, however, found it quite interesting that some of the loudest critics of the Black Spark's videos have come from within the gay porn industry itself. On one hand, it's not surprising at all; but on the other, failing to find some kind of synergy between public interest in the Black Spark and ciphering that excitement to one's own product is a missed opportunity.
I'm not insinuating that every studio begin their own sub-par knock-off series of Black Spark-style videos, but still, don't look a gift horse in the mouth. The sheer volume of public interest proves that people are willing to try new things when it comes to porn consumption. The tried and true formula doesn't need to be changed, but the options that are out there need to be broadened.
At a time when safe-sex awareness is at an all time high, it may seem subversive for the Black Spark videos to seemingly glorify raw sex and cum-swallowing. But this is where the comparisons to porn can get a little murky. What these guys are creating is indeed intended for public consumption and conversation, but the primary players in the videos are not being paid to do this. This is not pornography as we've come to define it. These are real guys, who want to show their very real sex life in a unique light. The message that guides the Black Spark is one of lust.
Whereas condoms are a staple of my own sex life, the charged eroticism of these videos does not inspire me to ditch them. If it inspires me to do anything, quite honestly, it's just to beat my meat a little faster.
Introducing Seven Spark
I haven't spent much time dissecting the actual players behind the masks and behind the cameras, because many other blogs have done just that. The message that prevails every time is that the videos are less about identity and more about sexuality. We, as viewers, can project onto the mask whatever we like.
Gay Demon has a great piece on the timeline of the Sparks. I'd also encourage you to visit The Six Pack podcast to listen to an audio interview by the Black Spark.
The final thought I'll leave you with is the Black Spark National Tour. It's quite an ambitious undertaking for a movement that is still effectively in it's infancy. However, if they manage to pull this thing off, I have a feeling that the Sparks will be more than just a flash in the pan. Cultivating a fan base like this could be huge for their future endeavors. I have no doubt the Black Spark will continue to evolve over time, but they won't be fading from memory so long as they keep delivering these mouth-watering compilations.
Last night, Dirk from House of XY debuted one of the first videos from the UV by XY series. It's, in a word, spectacular. I've been noticing more audacity on the part of filmmakers lately to create visuals that, while still classified as pornography, are so much more. There's a whole new class of avant erotica out there – or at least that's what I'm calling it. I haven't heard it described as such elsewhere, so I'm coining the phrase, nerds!
