Oh Brother, Soul Sister

The top selling song on iTunes this year was “Hey Soul Sister” by Train. Now, if you like this song good for you. I’m not saying it’s a bad song. Everything in this life is subjective. The thing that disturbs me most is just how generic and contrived the song was.
It was as though every commercial hook and melody of the past five years had been compressed into one song, and that recipe produced this song. Tell me, could you imagine Sheryl Crow singing this on her “Soak Up The Sun” LP? How about commercialized Jason Mraz? Not to mention the countless one-off artists who’ve released a variation of the same song. But I digress. Good for you, Train. You’ve effectively managed to make the year’s top digital selling song one that was absolutely made to be bought, not enjoyed.

Spike Video Game Awards (Winners)

The Spike Video Game Awards aired earlier this evening, and despite sending out a tweet reminding everyone to tune in, I forgot to do just that. However, here are the winners from tonight’s showcase:

Game of the Year
Red Dead Redemption

Best Studio
BioWare, for Mass Effect 2

Best Action Adventure Game
Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood

Best Shooter
Call of Duty: Black Ops

Best Performance By A Human Male
Neil Patrick Harris in Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions

Best Independent Game
Limbo

Most Anticipated Game For 2011
Portal 2

Best Soundtrack
DJ Hero 2

Character of the Year
Sgt. Woods (Call of Duty: Black Ops)

I can’t say that there were any surprises on this list. It all seems a bit self-serving to me, but the one shining star of all the winners announced for me is Limbo. If you have an XBox 360 and you don’t own this game, get on over to the XBLA Marketplace and purchase it. It’s one of my favorite games of the year. It reminds you just how awesome learning to play video games was when you were a kid. Only the style is decidedly dark.

Wookiee Dog FTW!

If I liked small dogs, I would definitely get this wookie. #starwars

When Photos Met Gaming

My very own GameBoy from days of yore. (Complete with GameBoy Camera attached.)

My very own GameBoy from days of yore. (Complete with GameBoy Camera attached.) I was hoping to do naughty things with the camera once I rediscovered this little gem but there were two problems: the first being that there is no method of transferring the images from the gameboy to a computer (the nerve!) and the second being the quality is shit-tay. Sure this was a novel device back in ’96, complete with it’s own heat-paper printer, but it hasn’t withstood the test of time.

Mario’s World

They have time to do this AND beat all our our students at math and science.
