The top selling song on iTunes this year was "Hey Soul Sister" by Train. Now, if you like this song good for you. I'm not saying it's a bad song. Everything in this life is subjective. The thing that disturbs me most is just how generic and contrived the song was. It was as though every commercial hook and melody of the past five years had been compressed into one song, and that recipe produced this song. Tell me, could you imagine Sheryl Crow singing this on her "Soak Up The Sun" LP? How about commercialized Jason Mraz? Not to mention the countless one-off artists who've released a variation of the same song. But I digress. Good for you, Train. You've effectively managed to make the year's top digital selling song one that was absolutely made to be bought, not enjoyed.
